In 2007: Degerman compiled a 5-5 record with one save and 4.31 ERA, between a season split in Quad Cities and Palm Beach. While in Quad Cities he had a 1-1 record and a 2.45 ERA. He struck out 71 batters in only 47.2 innings of work, the most for any Swing pitcher who pitched less than 50 innings. He averaged 13.41 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched with the Swing, and had 11.26 punch-outs per 9 over the entire ’07 season; similar numbers to ’06 and one the most prolific strike out pitchers in A Ball this pas season. His miniscule .94 WHIP was second best on the Quad Cities pitching staff, and held opponents to a .208 average between his two stops. Career Highlights: In 2006, Degerman was selected in the fourth (4th) round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He picked up just where he left off after pitching for the College World Series Rice Owls, as he led State College (the Cardinals Short-Season Affiliate) with a 2.72 ERA and had 11.27 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched. In 9 games started, he finished 2-1 with the 2.72 ERA and surrendered only 37 hits in just over 42 innings pitched while striking out 53. Degerman concluded his career with the Rice Owls after compiling a 2006 season for the record books. He was selected to the 2006 Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger and Baseball America All-American first teams while recording a school-record 172 strikeouts his senior season. After leading Rice to the College World Series and a No. 1-ranking for most of the season, Degerman finished his 2006 campaign with a 13-2 record, a 2.00 ERA, a 3 to 1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and held his opponents to a .170 batting average. He also averaged 11.89 strikeouts per nine innings. Heading into the World Series, he was in the top 10 in the nation in ERA (10th), victories (third) and strikeouts per nine innings (sixth). After his junior season, Degerman was drafted in the 41st round by the Boston Red Sox and finished with an 8-1 record and a 3.28 ERA He struck out 117 in 98.2 innings pitched. The Grenada Hills, Calif., native was a finalist for the 2006 Roger Clemens Award, the 2006 CSTV Player of the Year and the 2006 Dick Howser Award. He was also named a 2006 Academic All-American. |
