In 2008: Langwell was drafted in the 11th round of the MLB amateur draft by the Cleveland Indians. He made his professional debut and spent the entire season with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League. He went 1-4 with a 7.47 ERA in 12 games (seven starts), striking out 20 and walking 11 in 31 1/3 innings. His starts came in his first seven outings as he went 1-4 with a 9.25 ERA over 24 1/3 innings. After his conversion to reliever he did not record a decision, posting a 1.29 ERA in seven innings spanning five appearances.
Career Highlights: In 2005 at Sam Houston State he pitched in 14 games going 1-3 with a 6.40 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 52 innings. After not playing in the 2006 season, he decided to transfer to Rice University. He proved to be one of Conference USA's top pitchers leading the conference in opponent’s batting average (.206) and ERA (2.35). His performance earned him All NCAA Houston Regional and C-USA All Tournament honors. He also went 8-4 with 1 save in a career high 84.2 innings pitched. In 2008, he appeared in 17 games and went 5-1 with a complete game and a 4.52 ERA in 73.2 innings.
