In 2007: After spending his past two seasons in the Astros organization, Thompson was signed as a free agent by the Kansas City Royals. In his first season with the Burlington Bees, Thompson set career highs in almost every offensive category with 35 runs, 84 hits, 22 doubles, 19 homeruns, 54 RBI’s, 15 walks, a .421 slugging percentage and .691 OPS. He proved to be the teams top power hitter leading the team in homeruns and RBI’s while finishing second in total bases (163) and third in doubles. He also compiled a .217 average and finished fourth in homeruns in the Midwest League. The third baseman was named a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star and a Midwest League Post-Season All-Star in his third minor league year.

Career Highlights: In 2006, Thompson spent the majority of the season at class A Lexington playing in 52 games with 14 runs, 36 hits, 10 doubles, 4 homeruns, 18 RBI’s, and a .213 average. He also spent time with high A Salem batting .236 with 3 runs, 13 hits, 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 1 SB and a .276 OBP in 55 at-bats.

Thompson was selected by the Houston Astros in the 26th round of the 2005 MLB draft. In his first professional season he competed for the low A Tri City Valley Cats of the NY-Penn League. In 53 games, he posted a solid .262 average to go along with 23 runs, 53 hits, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 3 homeruns and 28 RBI’s. He also posted a .302 OBP and was 4/4 in stolen base opportunities.

Before his career, Thompson attended Santa Clara University where he started for three years. In his last season, he was the team leader in doubles (20), RBI’s (38) and total bases (90). He also was second in homeruns (6) and runs (32); and had a 14 game hitting streak. In 2004, he earned second-team All-West Coast Conference honors as a utility player. He hit a career .321 and was second on the Broncos with 16 doubles and led the team in hit by pitches (11). As a freshman in 2005, he posted a career high 2 triples and hit 10 doubles, 6 homeruns and was second on the Broncos with 35 RBI’s.

In his collegiate career, he had 164 hits, 99 runs, 46 doubles, 2 triples, 15 homeruns, and 106 RBI’s in only 591 at-bats.
