In 2007: Wertz saw limited action for low A Williamsport. He appeared in 3 games, starting one for the Crosscutters. He finished the year going 1-0 allowing 6 hits and 2 walks and striking out 9 batters over his 8 scoreless innings pitched. The former Nebraska star also totaled one save and a 1.00 WHIP in his first season.

Career Highlights: Wertz was chosen in the 13th round of the 2007 MLB draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. Throughout his 3 year career with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, he proved to be one of their best pitchers and reliable relievers while on the staff. In his last season as a junior, he led all pitchers with a 2.98 ERA. Appearing in 16 games, he made 4 starts and finished with a 4-1 record. In his 60.1 innings pitched, he struck out 66 and walked only 18 hitters.

Working out of the bullpen in 2006, he went 1-0 with 1 save and a 3.00 ERA in his 12 appearances. Shoulder surgery cut his season 6 weeks short, but he still managed to fan 13 hitters in 15.0 innings. His first year with Nebraska in 2005 would prove to be memorable for the young pitcher. He was one of the true first year players who played a major role in Nebraska’s College World Series appearance. He finished his freshman year pitching in 10 games (2 starts) going 1-0 with a 4.42 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 18.1 innings of work.
